This prayer book is organized in the same way as the author’s Executive Prayerbook.
Step One
Start by recalling that you are about to God who will listen. First, we tell God what we are thinking about with a Reflection on a situation. We speak about that situation with the Lord. First read what the author has “said” to God about the situation. Then you tell God what you think in your own words. Talk to God not about God.
Step Two
Listen to what God has to say about such situations. Reflect on Scripture, Hebrew as well as New Testament as it speaks to you about such situations.
Step Three
Put together what you said to God and what God said to you. Think about the scripture, think about the situation. Talk about it with God in a freeform conversation. Make a determination for action where applicable or just enjoy being with God.
It is helpful to choose a regular time and quiet place so that you can become more comfortable and adept an engaging with God. This is NOT, an “I ought, I should, I better…” but rather this is a gift to me that I can take up. Start small and regular and don’t fret because according to St. Paul, the Holy Spirit helps us to pray when we need it. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit, intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
You can use this schema as a crutch in the beginning as you and the Spirit establish your own way of relating.
